Let’s talk about something that’s often left unsaid in construction: Mental Health.

Behind the hard hats and high-vis, too many people are struggling – and not speaking up.

Because in this industry, stress is expected, long hours are normal, and asking for help can still be seen as a weakness.

In the construction industry, workers are four times more likely to pass away by suicide and a staggering 73% of the UK’s 2.1 million construction workers being affected by mental illness. Sadly, in the last decade, 7,000 have taken their own lives.

That’s not just a statistic. That’s someone’s child, relative, friend, or colleague.

It is time we changed the culture, made space for real conversations, and recognised that looking after your mental health is just as important as wearing a hard hat.

If you’re in the industry, or know someone who is, check in. Talk. Listen. Remind them they are not alone.

We need to see a reduction in the statistics.

Is Your Organisation Prepared to Prevent Suicide?

Ask yourself:
– Do we have a clear suicide prevention policy in place?
– Are our leaders and teams trained to spot the signs and respond?
– Do employees know where to turn for help?
– Are we equipped to support staff after a crisis?
– Are we aligned with best-practice standards like BS 30480?
