CSCS Green Card (Labourer)

A CSCS Green Labourer Card is for construction workers, especially entry-level labourers, who need to show they have the knowledge and skills to work safely on a construction site.

How do I get a CSCS Green Labourer Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of one of the following:

  • The Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
  • The Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety
  • The NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) unit
  • A CSCS approved alternative qualification for example CITB Health and Safety Awareness course

The Labourer card is valid for five years and cannot be renewed. Instead, individuals should apply for a new Labourer card when their existing card expires.

Individuals should not apply for this card if you work in a skilled occupation.

CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker)

The CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card is for skilled construction workers in the UK who perform specialized roles, such as plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry, or electrical work. It’s a step up from the entry-level Green Labourer Card and indicates a higher level of skill and competence.

How do I get a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the CSCS Card Finder.

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of a construction related NVQ/SVQ level 2 or SVQ at SCQF level 5 or completed an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds Craft Certificate (CGLI) or a CSCS-recognised Apprenticeship.

The Blue Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and can only be renewed six months prior to, and up to six months after, the expiry date printed on the card.

CSCS White Card (Professionally Qualified Person)

The CSCS White Professionally Qualified Person card is for members of CSCS-approved professional bodies.

How do I get a CSCS White Professionally Qualified Person Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals.

Step two:

Provide proof of achievement current membership of the professional body at a level accepted by CSCS, by providing one of the following:

  • A membership certificate, showing membership for the current calendar year.
  • A membership card – both sides, confirming membership for the current calendar year.
  • An up-to-date letter or email from the professional body confirming membership for the current calendar year.
  • A receipt of payment for membership for the current calendar year.
  • A clearly dated screenshot showing your current membership from your professional body’s website.

Membership is required to be renewed annually, and the above evidence must confirm membership for the current calendar year and the level of membership held. Failure to renew, or revocation of, a Professional Membership may result in a card being cancelled without notice.

The Professionally Qualified Person card is valid for five years and cannot be renewed. Instead, individuals should apply for a new PQP card when their existing card expires.

CSCS White Card (Academically Qualified Person)

The CSCS White Academically Qualified Person card is available to people who have completed certain construction related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and certain NEBOSH diplomas and certificates. 

How do I get a CSCS White Academically Qualified Person Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals.

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of qualification and where possible evidence of the units achieved within the qualification.

The Academically Qualified Person card is valid for five years and cannot be renewed. Instead, individuals should apply for a new AQP card when their existing card expires.

CSCS Red Card (Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager)

The CSCS Red Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card is available specifically to Supervisors, Managers and Technical Workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) whom are registered to a complete an approved construction related Technical, Supervisory or Management (TSM) NVQ/SVQ Level 3, SVQ at SCQF level 6 or higher.

How do I get a CSCS Red Experienced TSM Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the CSCS Card Finder.

Step two: Provide proof of registration onto their qualification.

This temporary card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

CSCS Red Card (Trainee Card)

The CSCS Red Trainee card is available to those registered to complete a construction related qualification.

The qualification may be vocational, academic or professional, but it must be acceptable for a skilled CSCS card.

Step two: Provide proof of registration onto their qualification.

The card is valid for five years and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires.

CSCS Gold Card (Skilled Worker)

The CSCS Gold Skilled Worker is for people who have achieved a level 3 or higher Construction Related S/NVQ, or have completed an approved apprenticeship or other industry-approved qualification. The card is intended for Advanced Craft and Supervisors in the construction industry.

How do I get a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the CSCS Card Finder.

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of one of the following:

  • Construction Related NVQ/SVQ level 3 or SVQ at SCQF level 6.
  • Approved apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC, Institute of Apprenticeships etc.)
  • Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship that included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

The Gold Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and can only be renewed six months prior to, and up to six months after, the expiry date printed on the card.

The CSCS Gold Supervisor card is available for supervisor and technical occupations.

How do I get a CSCS Gold Supervisory Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Specialist Supervisors

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of a Construction Related Supervisory/Technical NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or 4.

CSCS Black Card (Manager)

The CSCS Black Manager card is available for managers and those in technical occupations

How do I get a CSCS Black Manager Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals

Step two: Provide proof of achievement of a:

  • Relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7
  • SVQ at SCQF Level 10 or 11 in Construction Management/Technical related qualification

The Black Manager card is valid for five years and can only be renewed six months prior to, and up to six months after, the expiry date printed on the card.

CSCS Red Temporary Card (Experienced Worker)

The CSCS Red Temporary Experienced Worker card is for workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who are registered to a complete an approved construction related NVQ/SVQ level 2, SVQ at SCQF level 5 or higher.

How do I get a CSCS Red Temporary Experienced Worker Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the CSCS Card Finder.

Step two: Provide proof of registration onto their qualification.

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

CSCS Red Card (Industry Placement)

The CSCS Red Industry Placement card is for those undergoing a construction-related qualification or training programme which requires the completion of a minimum 30 day work placement, such as T-Levels or Trainee Skills Development Programmes.

How do I get a CSCS Red Industry Placement Card

Step one: For CSCS, SKILLcard and JIB-PMES, take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. For ECS, it will be the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

Step two: Provide proof of registration onto their registration onto their T Level, Traineeship, or other programme by completing the Enrolment Evidence Form
and upload it during the application process.

This card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. The Industry Placement card does not lead to a skilled CSCS card.

CSCS Red Card (Provisional)

The CSCS Red Provisional card is for individuals working through probationary periods while employers assess their suitability for employment. 

How do I get a CSCS Red Provisional Card

Step one: Take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. 

Step two: You can only apply for a provisional card if you have not held a CSCS card before and this card can only be applied for once.

This card is valid for six months and is not renewable. Before it expires, Provisional card holders should achieve or be registered for a recognised construction related qualification and apply for the appropriate CSCS card for their job.
